Battery life of GPS devices vary, so it is important to have a cigarette lighter charger as you do not want to run out of juice when you are on the road.
4.Avoid leaving GPS device mounted on the windshield in a hot car for long periods of time. It is also a good way to prevent the device from being stolen, since even leaving the window screen mount in view is an advertisement that a GPS device may be in the car.
5.Most car navigation systems include an extensive POI database including restaurants along the interstate. Choose the cuisine you want and your GPS will display a list of results by proximity. Filter out only those along your route and your forward seeking food radar will update faster.
6.Some GPS devices also contain useful travel advice which can be very helpful if you are unfamiliar with road rules in other countries. For example, some device menus contain guides for multiple countries and cover local road rules, public holidays, accommodation advice and more.
7.When navigating to a place, it may be easier to search for a place by name rather than address. For example if you wish to visit the British Museum in London you can find it listed under museums as a point of interest and be able to navigate there without knowing the exact address.
8.And most importantly, make sure you dust off your GPS-knowledge and get the upper hand on your pending trip before you embark. Just be smart and make good use of your GPS.

A top for travel tip in winter is that wherever you go, pack a knee rug and an old fashioned hot water bottle that you can fill in the evenings and take it along to bed with you, the knee rug is warm if chilly air hits an open game viewing vehicle and it can double up as an extra blanket when you are sleeping.

Some Basic Information
“Bien Viaje” is a useful expression for you to know when travelling and backpacking around Mexico. It is very likely that you will encounter many native Mexicans and their children when backpacking Mexico according to the excellent travel book The People’s Guide to Mexico (by Carl Franz and Lorena Havens, Avalon Travel, 2007). When doing so and departing from them, they may wish you Bien Viaje (Safe Journey). You may pick up such phrases from the “Useful Expressions” section of Knopf Guides Mexico (2006) and other travel guides. It might be a good idea for the traveler to know some of these basic phrases and expressions and other points of interest for their trip. It is also a good idea to read up and do some research on this beautiful country.
Basic People Info
Some very basic backpacking and traveling Mexico information for one to know is that the traveler (from outside of Mexico) will likely be noticed by the locals wherever they may travel and camp. Remember that the traveler will look and be different and the locals will likely marvel at this. Children can be particularly invasive. But, these folks will mostly remain friendly. This means that if the traveler desires privacy, planning and scouting for privacy will be of necessity. If privacy is not a necessity, it is also important to remember that the people can be a great source of information and creature comforts.
Getting Around
How one gets around Mexico while backpacking and traveling seems like a very basic question. Besides getting around on foot the travelers can get around a variety of ways; RV, RV Caravan, Motorhomes, Trailers, Vans, Pickups, Cars and Rent-A-Cars (of course). RV Caravans can be the largest and most noticeable of ways to get around. But their special appeal is in the number of goods and foodstuffs these fellow travelers may be able to offer in trade in barter. That can be a good thing to know when the backpacker is running short on supplies and/or funds.
Another good and economical thing to know is that it is equally acceptable to camp through Mexico via one’s car. Many backpackers and travelers have noted that this can be a very inexpensive way to shelter overnight. However, it has been infamously stated that if one’s car or vehicle has USA license plates that it will be stolen. This may be a shameful thing to say but notoriously represented in such movies as Traffic (2000). For this reason, some folks prefer to go Rent-A-Car camping.
Security and Safety
While most places are safe and friendly to camp and backpack in Mexico, this lovely country has sometimes had some security issues appear in the international news. As was just mentioned, it is sometimes seen as best to rent a car than to bring in one with USA license plates. It is a good idea to check for travel warnings to any foreign country through TravelState (dotGov) before traveling there. For example, the site posted a travel warning to Mexico as recently as 8/27/2010. Please note that the site does state that millions of Americans travel safely to Mexico each year.

I am always going on business trips for work. The one thing I cannot travel without is my trusty laptop. As much as I love my MacBook, it is always an annoyance having to put the laptop through security, carry it with me around the airport, and finally, get it, along with myself, onto the plane. Normally it is not a question for me; I always bring my laptop as a carry-on. However, on my most recent business trip I decided that because I was not planning to do any computer work on the plane, there was no reason to carry it with me. I regrettably checked it in with the rest of my luggage. This was the worst mistake I could have made. For a seasoned business traveler, this may seem like a blunder only a novice would make. However, sometimes we all need a little reminding. I hope by relaying my story, I can save you from making the same mistake I did.
A laptop is an extremely valuable portable device. Whether you are in the office or on the go, it can quickly provide you with access to important data, information, and software. However, it is for these same reasons that laptops are of great interest to thieves, and, consequently, highly vulnerable to theft. In fact, the Safeware Insurance Group reported that in the US, laptop owners have a 1 in 14 chance that their laptop will be stolen. Of course, I am aware that laptops are a prime target for theft, but I thought it would be perfectly safe in my suitcase. I could not have been more wrong. Just because it was packed amongst my business suits and collared shirts did not mean it was protected. The fact is that you really must be aware of where your laptop is at all times, and, if it is checked in with the rest of your luggage, you are violating this simple rule. You have absolutely no idea who may be handling it or where it may end up. By naively deciding to check my laptop along with the rest of my luggage, I was in a sense setting myself up for it to be taken. What is more, the scariest part about having your laptop stolen is the fact that your confidential data inside is now accessible to a thief. Who knows the intentions of a thief? Needless to say, once I discovered my laptop had been taken, I was scared.
I know it may seem like a big hassle having to unload your laptop just to make it through security, but I promise you this: unloading your laptop at the security gate in an airline is only a minor inconvenience in comparison to the trouble that comes with a stolen laptop.
Filing a police report, working without your important files, and worrying someone may be committing identity theft with your personal information are inconveniences to avoid at all costs.
What is the easy solution? Get a computer case. I recently purchased an excellent computer case that not only securely holds my laptop, but also has room to store the other essential carry-on items I need during the flight. I love it because in addition to being very compact and portable, it is also quite fashionable. Having a computer case lets me check-in my one piece of luggage worry-free because I know my laptop is safe and secure by my side.
Still, even when you make the safe choice and carry your laptop onto the plane, there are a few things to be aware of while traveling. Make sure and keep a close eye on your laptop while it is on the conveyer belt at the security gate and dont forget to pick it up again after it has passed through security. Finally, keep your laptop near you on the plane at your feet or in a locked case stowed away in the overhead compartments and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
